Aussies are trying to play “catch-up.”

TOUGH new laws to wipe out graffiti were introduced to State Parliament yesterday.
Vandals could spend up to two years behind bars or be slapped with fines of more than $26,000.
The legislation will give police the power to lay specific graffiti charges.
Other key features of the new laws include:
A BAN on carrying spray cans near public transport without a legitimate reason, and fines of up to $2750 for breaking it.
STRONGER powers for police to search suspected graffiti vandals.
FINES of up to $2200 for selling spray paint to anyone under 18, unless for work reasons.
A CLAMPDOWN on spray paint advertising that encourages graffiti.
GIVING officials the right to enter private property to clean up graffiti.
The State Government will also fund new surveillance equipment to help police catch vandals in the act.
Programs to force graffiti vandals to clean up their own mess will also be expanded.

More to come later once I’ve studied this thing for a bit.

City officials want to fight graffiti and other forms of vandalism with bullet proof cameras about the size of a lunch box.

Banksy, an anonymous graffiti artist who graduated from the U.K. streets to the auction rooms, will be represented in the London October sales with at least eight works at Sotheby’s.

Banksy’s “David,” a 2006 fiberglass tribute to Michelangelo’s 500-year-old statue in Florence, has a top estimate of 150,000 pounds ($299,655) for Sotheby’s contemporary art auction on Oct. 12, according to preliminary catalog information.

“Gangster Rat” from 2004, an acrylic and spray paint stencil on canvas, has a top estimate of 12,000 pounds for an Oct. 15-day sale.

Banksy spray-paints works of political satire in the London streets and has attracted collectors including artist Damien Hirst. Banksy’s record of 288,000 pounds was set for a design commissioned by the pop band Blur, at a Bonhams London auction in April, more than doubling the artist’s previous peak price.

Sharon Balbi, 42, was given an interim anti-social behaviour order (Asbo) at Reading Magistrates’ Court.

On Friday she admitted 13 offences of criminal damage and asked for a further 223 offences dating back to 2004 to be taken into consideration.

Balbi, of Tilehurst, Reading, sprayed tags, including GUS, ICE, ART, CSI and HAWK on vehicles around Reading.

The Asbo bans Balbi from carrying items that could be used for carrying out graffiti offences.

Big Crackdown In Delaware Tonight!

Heads up!

A big crackdown is underway in Delaware tonight on what state officials say is an even bigger problem – graffiti.

It’s a new anti-graffiti strategy officially unveiled today, after various schools in New Castle County were defaced.

Graffiti is becoming a growing problem in Delaware and that’s why Delaware State Police are launching a campaign that will reward those who turn the taggers in.

State police and Crimestoppers hope new posters that read, “Turn in a tagger, get a hundred bucks,” help put an end to graffiti.

Cleaning up graffiti in Wilmington is a 35-thousand dollar expense … that’s ten thousand dollars more than the city was forced to spend last year. The graffiti on William Penn High School in New Castle will take four thousand dollars to clean.

Today state police announced the arrest seven juveniles for committing the crime.

So, I’ve been noticing that the whole fire extinguisher thing caught on quicker than flies on…anyways, so since it’s all over the net now I’ll go ahead and post some stuff. Enjoy!

Some dude on Instructables posted everything.

THE sale of paint spray cans could be outlawed across New South Wales in an attempt to tackle graffiti vandalism which generates an annual $100 million clean-up bill.

The NSW Attorney General, John Hatzistergos, has launched an urgent review of legislation surrounding graffiti vandalism and said that a total ban on spray cans may be the only answer.

Graffiti costs local councils millions to remove with Sydney City alone spending up to $3 million a year to clean up in the CBD.

“Last year the Government set up the NSW Anti-Graffiti Action Team to drive new measures to reduce graffiti,” Mr Hatzistergos said.

“One of our election commitments was that the AGAT would review all relevant legislation and examine the possibility of a total ban on spray paints.”
